North West Passage

Rae found Franklin’s men
all dead of course
and clear evidence
that in extemis
they had turned cannibal
Franklin’s widow
demonised John Rae
he never got the credit
for the part he played
paving the ice
for Amundsen
…..politics
stories that don’t suit
melted and refrozen
into safer shapes
you could be forgiven
for mistaking Margaret’s funeral
for a send-off for a saint
though there was clear evidence
of cannibalism

  1. Margaret came as a surprise. I like your lines “stories that don’t suit melted and frozen into safer shapes”. That is just what happens, except for the victims who just can’t forget what things were really like. Great poem.
