Back then

she was an M&S amazon …………………………you didn’t mess
in the old days when reduced counter didn’t mean
tracking pounds shed ……………………………..when end of line
was oddment ………………………………………….jumbled for us to root and sift
another layer of hunter/gather instinct conned by shopping

she always left them tidier ………………………pairing shoes
folding cardigans …………………………………..stacking like with like
a lifetime measured ……………………………….in shoe sizes
sugar bags …………………………………………….Christmas Annuals
and paper patterns by Simplicity

she never worked for Marks ……………………but as a customer
she sorted out the chaos of those counters
unable to resist the impulse ……………………to straighten up

How lovely she sounds. for my mum, M&S was the apex of shopping poshness. We weren’t allowed in Tesco. We used Pricerite, ironically Mum and Dad pronounced it PRICE ER ITE and didn’t realise they were shopping in the equivalent of Costco. They would have rather died.

Mu Mum wasn’t terribly impressed with M&S – she thought they stocked too many of each line so that you saw lots of people in the same frock. (She had a point.) And she thought they were pricey. But she liked their vests.
She enjoyed trips to IKEA in later years – pronouncing it EEKY.
